How do I make my enemies respawn to a specific number?

I can't get my head around the variable stuff and while I know how to use an emitter to spawn enemies I can't work out how to put a specific number to them so when you kill that number the level ends or you can progress. I'll admit I'm dumb when it comes to this stuff so putting it into the most simple terms would help. Thanks
