How do I stop a controlled object inching up as it hits things?

I have a machine that hovers and moves around great, only problem is its vertical alignment getting knocked off if it hits anything too hard. It will go up and not come back down. Is there anyway I can create a default vertical level I can keep it at during the whole Dream? Thanks.

  You could create an object that follows the machine on x and z only. Then make the machine follow the object on y (up and down) only.
