Spotlight limitations?

  • Sumasshu

Does toggling the lights on only when they're needed get around this shadow limitation? Or are they all needed to be on at once?

  • Xionbrium

Yeah, sadly in this case they need to all be on at once.

I think the worse case scenario would be me having to redo my light set up. It's not going to be impossible, just tricky and maybe a tad difficult/time consuming. The good thing is I believe this limitation will only really rear its head for those who are unaware of it. Anyone else might be able to work around it by starting their projects with such a thing in mind. (Which is what I'll do).

    Hi,

If you set the lights to radius lights, so not with a beam they are a lot lot cheaper.
And you can then have loads more.
But, they don't cast shadows and render in a different way.
Also on all the spotlights you can untick the option to cast shadows, that will make them cheaper and you may be able to use more/avoid the pops you are seeing.

So in order of expense cheapest to most expensive

    Radius light

    Glowing object/sculpt

    Spotlight that doesn't cast shadows

    Spotlight that does cast shadows

    Hope that helps

    John

Out of curiosity, what is the "limitation" you're talking about? How does it manifest itself?

  • Xionbrium

Thank you John, I'll keep this in mind when I decide to use spotlights again since they're still pretty nifty.

I say this because I seemingly have found another solution too, much to my excitment. Using "diffuse" lights seem to give me more freedom than the spotlight option, it's also making my level look a lot better as a bonus.

Just came to this. Helpful list thanks John!
