How do I move the thing I'm holding closer to or further from myself?

When my imp is holding an object such as a shape in sculpt mode, it's quite hard to manuever it into place in the forwards/backwards direction. Currently the only way I seem to be able to do this is by moving the camera forwards or backwards, but sometimes my camera is quite far out and I want to get in closer, but moving in closer then carries the shape away from where I want it to be.

I can position in the 2D plane with the gyro, but how do I change the depth of my imp and what it's holding relative to the camera?

  You can use R1 (grabcam) to move the imp closer or further from the camera
