paint in 2d

I'm trying to draw (paint) a 2d character, but i can't work out how to paint in 2d.

Like, if i paint using the move controllers, it looks perfect until i move the camera and see that all the strokes are at different depths of the z-axis. Is there a way to lock movement of the imp to only x and y?

  I use a cube as a background and when I draw I turn on the snap to surface option....this way everything sticks to the cube....after the drawing delete the cube ...baboom 2D painting :D
