Something seems to have changed in my settings and I'm not sure how to change it back.
I was doing some sculpting and put the controllers down on my lap to take a break. I must have leant on them at some point because when I continued I found that bits I was cutting away had now become "cut out sculpts" and stayed where they were when I tried moving the visible part of the sculpt. Also now when I switch back and forth between add and subtract with the moves, it doesn't keep the shape I was using.
I'm not particularly the most observant person in the world, but I'm absolutely certain it wasn't functioning this way before.
I'm wondering have I stumbled upon a glitch, or is there a way to change this back? Assuming anything has gone wrong of course.
Thanks.

First thing you described sounds like the cut out option in sculpt mode which you access using L1 and square. Not sure about the second thing you mention.

Double checked the cut out option at the time and it was off. I was also having some problems with the mirror, where I would still get the effects despite turning it off.
Things seem to have gone back to normal now, thankfully, so I'm thinking it may have been a temporary glitch.
The bits I cut out remain where they are when I try moving a sculpture while scoped in, however so it seems it may be an intentional function by Mm. -
What do you mean by "cut out"? Have they become separate sculpts? That's a tool in sculpt mode. Maybe just make sure to select the stamp or smear tool instead.

By cut out I mean they're like separate artifacts that I can manipulate just like an ordinary shape, only they're invisible. They remain in place when I move the visible part of the sculpt around. Normally it wouldn't be an issue but when I try to copy something from a sculpt to use in the same sculpt it doesn't also copy the cuts I made to the original piece. It makes it pretty resource heavy having to copy things to be new objects, rather than something part of the same sculpt.

Ah, I see. You're in negative mode. You can toggle between adding positive shapes and negative shapes (cutting away from positive shapes) with a button in the menu. Or the shortcut for that is triangle; I'm guessing that's how you switched accidentally.
