Difference between Merging and Grouping

  • mmdev5 - Liam

    Hey,

Grouping will take several objects and put them into one container. You can then scope into that container to access all of the bits that you selected when you made the group. This is useful when you want to treat a set of objects as one in order to move/animate/publish/hide/etc. them together.

Merging is purely for Paint objects, and it's mostly for optimisation. It takes the contents of several Paint objects and combines them into one single Paint object, which reduces the number of objects in your level. This option is useful to save on thermometer cost if you have lots and lots of Paint objects in your level.

    Hope that helps :)

Good to know. When you say 'grouping' are you talking about the stage when you've selected everything or the stage when you hit to number of selected things on the right side of the screen. It's just that I've heard you can adjust the setting of everything in a group at once but when I try it, after hitting the number' it just brings up a group menu with fewer options.

When you merge paintings, the system thinks that you made all the strokes in one go. That means when animating, you can't offset the starting time for when to animate them. Merging is good to use when you want to apply some finish, glow, or hue to all the groups at once.

One way to tweak all members of a group is to first scope into the group (L1+RX) and then double-click X. That will select everything inside the group at once.

Tweaking the group from outside, as you say, will only bring up the menu for the group itself, which is not usually what you want :)
