How do I make an object fade in and out of existence?

Unfortunately you cant change the opacity of sculpts so sculpts will just appear and dissapear. You can change the opacity of paint strokes however. You could use an action recorder to record you slowly lowering the opacity slider to have something fade out. :)

Following up on what sdcxsfd said, you can probably paint over the object you want using surface snap, increase opacity of the paint strokes, and then enable "Viewable" for the object.

Its a bit tedious, but you can get pretty good results if you take your time (I made a tardis in dreams that uses this technique) unfortunately I doubt you can really do it with anything that has a rounded surface as it would be hard to produce something like a smooth sphere using just paint strokes. :(

Thanks for the replies, I ended up using the opacity of paint strokes as it it can fade in/out quite smoothly using the transition between keyframes. Thanks guys.
