I just dealt with a similar issue. Make sure your joint connectors are going from YELLOW to BLUE going outwards from the pelvic bone. If not your "Bones" will be gray.

Here's something that might be effecting it, the sculpt for the thigh was made with the "CURVE" sculpt tool. Would that effect the joints and "bone" connections???
