Cut useless portions of long audio recording

I was wondering if there is a way to remove the portions of an audio recording. I know we can edit the start and stop to isolate the part we want to play, but how do you remove those unused parts altogether? Seems like a waste of memory. I remember from one of the MM video talks that they mentioned you can cut up an audio recording to a finalized version, but can't seem to find out how.

  I've been wondering this exact thing, would like to be able to cut up one recording into several different samples, or crop unwanted bits out of the middle of a recording.
