Why might an animation work on the timeline but not in play mode?
On the timeline, I've got animation of a door closing, two keyframes: open and closed. When I play the timeline in edit mode, the door closes correctly, but when I go into play mode the door only moves very slightly as if it's starting to close, but stops still wide open. Is this a bug, or is there some setting I should check that would explain why it's not moving in play mode the way it's moving on the timeline?

So when you're playing the timeline in edit mode are you using the Play Timeline Preview at the bottom of the timeline to test it? Or by clicking in R3?
If you are watching something on a timeline via the Play Timeline Preview button it ignores any logic or physics with the items being animated.
Could you perhaps have something else affecting the door in the scene? Maybe a gadget? Is your work published, or are you able to take a screenshot of your logic or upload a video? :)

Thanks Catherine! Yep, it turned out simply to be that I had the door's bolt at maximum tightness.
