How do I...Measure a puppet's moved distance? / Create stretching ruler?

Hey folks. What I want to do is show how far an object or puppet is moving between when it is grabbed by the imp and let go again in a different location.

Imagine grabbing a puppet with your imp cursor. Then you drag said puppet across the environment a bit, and as you do a line or ruler with marks of measurement stretches forth from the starting location. When you plop the puppet down the ruler or line would disappear. The ruler gizmo would simply show how far the object has gone before it is let go of again.

Ideas?
