What exactly is the «recommended» sorting?

What parameters decide what shows up on recommended? Is it something like what’s got the most likes in the last days or something like that?

I would say it's more or less a placeholder at the moment. You have new, most liked and recommended. If it was down to voting then most liked would suffice so the only reason I can think of that recommended is there is for MM to highlight what they consider the best.
