Hold down L2 while smearing and use the left or right sticks.

Or another cool trick is to gently stroke the touch pad with the selected shape on your imp in sculpt mode to make it spin by itself!

Kareem used to do this by tweaking the shape and setting into a tumble before then smearing with it. I need to find my PS4 camera...

It's a bit hidden, but if you double tap the Secondary circle button while in sculpt mode, you'll get a rotate icon on your imp tip. You can then grab the object at the tip of your primary imp with T to spin it.
