PS5 Version

Why is this getting downvoted? It would be cool to be able to make bigger and more complex stuff thanks to the power of the PS5

    Great answers

One aspect is, someone saying on a forum "please give me a PS5 version" isn't going to make any difference to what comes in the next update. Making a native PS5 version would take a long time, figuring out the logistics of how it would split the community and only PS5 creators/players will be able to use certain features... it's a huge thing.

No doubt they are investigating such things. But this isn't a feature idea they could pop into a patch. It's a massive company-wide undertaking which they would decide on internally.

Another aspect is, a lot of people use any opportunity to harass Mm about "give us a PS5 version!" "put it on PC!" "when is online multiplayer?" Again, these things are very large undertakings and it's not something they can respond to on some random stream. If it happens, they would announce it off their own back, not in response to a comment or post.

Then you see any sort of announcement about Dreams, or any stream with a bigger fanbase when they're doing a one-off feature of Dreams... the chat/replies get flooded with demands of this kind phrased in a toxic vitriolic way without let up for the entire duration. It's insane, entitled behaviour to demand some huge feature or demand to know when it's coming over and over.

It gets tiresome pretty quick, and it's kinda triggering for a lot of long-time community members--whether the intention is less demanding or not.

There is a solution to this, but probably not one they can/want to do. Communicate about the plans for PS5. So if its something that could be happening and is planned, even if for 1-2-3 years from now, just put it on a roadmap. Obviously this is a double edged sword, once you have made that information public you cant take it back. But in my eyes this comes from not considering Dreams to be a development tool and still more of a game. It's all about how you communicate it, not what you communicate.ย

Even if you dont commit to adding to a roadmap, there could still be some way they could communicate it without commiting. "Welcoem to the R&D stream, today we are going to be looking at some of the experiments that may or may not make it into Dreams some day". Demonstrating the import of an image using their inhouse tool could be a good example! As long as it was presented correctly, it might ease some of the toxic!

I understand that this puts a lot of pressure on Mm but PS5 was developped with the intent to make porting games really easy, so I don't think making a PS5 version would be such a big deal.

However you raised the most important issue when you mentioned splitting the community, especially since the PS5 is out of stock everywhere. Now is not a good time for a PS5 version, not until they are back in stores. But I think this is something they will have to do eventually (and hopefully). Dreams is already such an amazing tool, but making it even more powerful will ensure that a lot of indie/enthusiast game dev will use it, making it even more successful and growing the community even more. It's a snowball effect.
