"Safe Surface-Snap" option for art tools
So currently, if you're scribbling paint over a sculpt it will surface-snap to the sculpt's surface just fine. But if you slip "outside the lines" where you're no longer hovering over a sculpt, it will leave this long trail into the distance. Which I've never found useful myself, and I can't think of a time when this *would* be useful for an artist. (But I can accept maybe someone likes this happening, so this should be an option people can choose to use.)
Instead, it could be made to simply stop the stroke/smear (potentially block stamp edits even?) whenever you're not hovering over a surface... and continue when you're hovering over again.
If the artist *does* want it to slip into the distance, they can easily add a sculpt at the distance they want it to slip to--giving them more control over if and when and how that happens. (They can already do this, of course.)
But I'd suggest that this is how the artist would *want* it to work; they *want* to snap the edit to a surface. They haven't indicated anything about how they want it to work when *not* hovering over a surface... so it could just *not work* in that situation. This would avoid having to redo that entire edit and being super careful to not colour outside the lines and get that weird line slipping into oblivion.
It would also save on memory, as the "slip" can be long and need to store a lot of positions (for each fleck in the paint stroke, at least).

I agree with this, i'd like to add that painting around a sculpt to "wrap it" with paint is currently quite fiddly (you need to make moving machines for that).
So, as you say, instead of the surface-snapped paint going to the stratosphere, i'd consider an optional/additional "Wrap Around" button instead of simple surface snap.
So you end up with 3 options:
- Surface snap (working basically like it does now)
- Tentacle snap (start on the element, then go away freely)
- Wrap around (keep it on the sculpt at all times, stop when the imp leaves the sculpt surface)
And even more additional ( XD ) feature for Wrap Around could be that, maybe with pressing L1 or something in paint mode, you paint on the other side of the sculpt without moving your camera. The sculpt could get transparent or show a bounding box, letting you paint over the hidden side of the camera.

About the wrap around... that sounds like it already works with surface-snap? Maybe I misunderstood. Or do you mean we could call this "safe" version the "wrap around" version?

At the time of writing my "wrap around" seemed like a great idea, re-reading it now maybe it wasn't so much, haha.
Yeah the wrap-around would basically be your idea of "safe surface-snap" so i'm really not adding anything useful, whoops.
I somewhat had the idea of paint wrapping an element 360° (not only on the surface facing the camera), but again thinking about it now it would be quite.uncomfortable.So in the end: yes i agree with your first post and please ignore my other posts XD
