What are some good things to sculpt to practice sculpting?

  • Magus0Mind00

Go to Media Molecules Twitch channel and watch the stream from today - gives a full overview of move controllers!

You want to practice with reference objects or images - don't just imagine an object and try to create it, actually look back and forth at a picture or a real thing while you're sculpting.

Try not to get attached to anything or any special result. Set a timer and work on your object for 10-15 minutes and then move on to the next practice. Most importantly, have fun!

To build on what Magus said, Man, I went in to sculpt something the first day and was horrible. Not that I'm a genius now, but anyway, I almost gave up out of frustration. Then I started over with a simple shape. A square button, that I could keyframe. Alright, that worked pretty good. Then I made a mallet hammer. Really just one shape, two different sized cylinders but still. I've slowly built up to where I'm now doing a spaceship. Not from my head but one from a show. Looking back and forth from pic to sculpt and trying to add details and stuff. Really teaching me a lot there. I'd recommend starting simple with like an everyday item, say a microwave or stove or something or maybe even just a couch. Playing around with the different setting to get the look you want.

Oooh, oooh, something I JUST learned yesterday. I was struggling making a curve shape. Well there is the curve tool but I couldn't get it to work right. I'm smearing it all over and going this ain't making a smooth curve! Before you stamp it down, L1+square to go into shape editor and now you can stretch it and it has different points that you can push up or down or whatnot to make a bend. Freaking awesome!

Heads are fun to play with. Use the mirror guide to keep things symmetrical (at least at first). Then just smear around a load of shapes and see how you get on. The key is to not worry about it looking good right-off. Just keep tweaking and playing and tinkering and using the different tools available. Then make a new head. XD

The best way to learn anything in Dreams is to take something someone else has created that you can remix and pull it apart bit by bit. Start simple and work your way up. Try recreating parts as you go.
