How do I make a puppet hold something?

I want to make a puppet that's in fps mode hold a lantern that I sculpted separately, how do I make it hold it? I've tried a follower but it doesn't work quite right unless I'm doing it wrong. Please help!

    You should be able to tunnel into the puppet's hand and place it where you want it - then it will be a part of that group. You can do this by holding the lantern with the imp and then pressing L1 + x over the puppet and then over the the puppet's hand until you only see the hand highlighted and you're not yet in sculpt mode. You can then position the torch where you want it and when you tunnel back out the torch will be attached to the hand.

    It doesn't seem to be working with the thing I'm using, I tried it with something else and it worked. Any idea why that might be? It groups but just falls out of its hand
