Easy way to "select all" to select everything in the environment at once?

If I want to shift or change the scale of the entire world, I have to hold x and try to highlight everything while hoping that I didn't miss something. Is there a shortcut to select everything without having to manually highlight every single detail?

In LBP and other 3d programs, I could just draw a box around what I wanted to highlight and it captured everything in the foreground/background as long as it was in that box. If something like that isn't available, that would be an awesome feature to add in.

  So we don't have a marquee select, however if you double tap an object in your scene with X it will select everything in the scene :)
  
  Or double tap while in a group to select all of the group contents.

  Oh wow, I'm surprised I haven't double tapped X and discovered that by accident. Thanks for the quick reply, that info will save me a ton of time!
