Drop Shadow Inside a Circle

Hi. I'm trying to make a transparent circle with a drop shadow on the inside and have it fade, but so far nothing I can come up with is giving good results. Paint doesn't give a clean look with its opacity settings because of all the noise/static/thingies. I tried using a text gadget but I can only make it work on the outside of the circle.

For reference this is what I'm trying to make:

Does anybody know how to get a similar look?

  Yeah there's no easy setting for something like that.

  Only thing I can think of is to use a solid grey circle. Then a fade-out white circle to do the fading. But if you want the middle to be transparent instead of white, I can't think of a way of doing that I'm afraid.

  Something somewhat similar (but different) is using the border of a text gadget, with the fall off. It will still be stronger in the middle and fall-off toward the outside (opposite to what you want) but the middle can be completely transparent. So it should be *closer* to what you're going for at least. And you might like the look after you try, dunno...
