Middleware to generate levels

How do I find middlewear, or reusable emitting logic, to help me generate levels? Do I always need to hand roll some logic driving an emitter?

How do people normally script, if that's an appropriate word, in the dreams universe, a level? Do we upload a checkbox bitmap type shorthand representation of the level, feed it in like a "player piano" roll, into our level generator?

  There are many ways you could do this. And people are working on different ways of doing this as we speak (Aecert for example). But most people just make their level rather than fiddle with abstract representations of their level without being able to see it. I'd find that much harder to work with and less intuitive than just placing a thing where I want the thing to be XD
