Taking Flight gamejam - has no flight code

  • cloudrising9

Maybe they want the community to do that part?

I think it was just confusingly named. It's not actually about flight, but about floating islands in the sky. The vehicles are just there to animate moving around to make it feel "lived in."

@TAPgiles I dont think you are right about that TAP as they have included collectables that look very much to me like flight rings that you are supposed to fly into on a path (think Quidditch games). So does anyone have a pre made flight code that can be added to the air vehicles? I can only find one tutorial on vehicle flight mechanics, that's NeontheCoder back in 2019 and is quite involved.

From watching the stream where they went through the whole kit they said the idea for the jam is about floating islands. They said the racing checkpoint ring things were based on an idea that occured to them last-minute so they made just that part.

I agree I expected there to be flight logic in place, but they didn't put it in. Putting that all together, it seems to me they didn't intend to have flight logic but for the community to add such things. If I'm incorrect, it still doesn't change anything. I guess I don't know what a "right" response would be to your question that would come from anyone but Reese who made the kit. But also would make no difference because there is still no flight logic built-in.

So I don't know how to help, or if it's even possible to help with your questions. But I tried.

Hello! I asked Rhys about this, the designer behind this wonderful kit. Rhys has confirmed there's no flying logic in the collection, and the air vehicles are sculpts only. The reasoning for this is that there's plenty of flying logic in the Dreamiverse and there's also plenty of ways this can be interpreted.

However, we're always open to feedback so we'll take this onboard and look into possibly adding logic for similar things in the future. Hope this helps!

I decided I should try making those vehicles fly!!

The Skycar drives like a car--R2 to accelerate, L2 to brake, left stick to steer. You can steer up and down too though. I've also added some animation that responds to the way the car is moving, so it feels more like it's a physical heavy van you're driving around through the air. And I've polished the smoke effects a touch so they trail behind the car.

The Biplane drives like a plane (probably)--it's always moving forwards, but R2 gives it a bit more oomph. Left stick up/down climbs and dives. Hold it to do a loop-de-loop. Left/right tilts the plane's wing left/right, and it turns based on the angle of the wings to the body. Hold it to do a (slightly janky) barrel roll. I was surprised at how well it works to be honest. I had to do some weird stuff to get how much the wings are tilting left/right, but it works :D

The Balloon "drives" like a hot air balloon--very slowly! Exciting! It's very floaty and slow. It'll slowly start to sink until you blast some fire with R2 and give it some lift (it shows a flame, and lights up the balloon from the inside too!). That runs out over time and you'll start sinking again. The left stick controls the "wind." A large force applier shoves everything (including paint, a little) in the direction you push the stick. Which in turn moves the balloon (and other balloons).

They all have an "Invert Y Controls" switch. And they use the default built-in camera but actually work pretty well with it!

So anyway... I hope some people use them in this jam--it would be fun to see some of my stuff used 😅

    1. There isn't a lot of flying logic in the Dreamiverse. I found 2 logic chips that reported to do this. They had no instructions for implementation and I could not get either of them to work. Trying to retro-fit other people's logic to other vehicles or mannequins is INCREDIBLY HARD and you need ADVANCED LOGIC skills to get them to work, which means that the person who can do that would probably be able to make a flying vehicle themselves anyway.

    2. When Mm release a kit for a flying gamejam I would expect there to be at least one flying vehicle in there - ideally a very simple rig that could be remixed and redesigned without needing to know how the logic works.

    3. There are only a handful of creators in Dreams who are generous enough to release their working logic and it is very wishful thinking that this would be made available for people to use during a gamejam. Luckily this thread has encouraged TAPgiles to do what he does, and add logic to the vehicles - but they will only be useful if Mm put them in the kit, as most people will not know they exist. Any chance that could happen?

    4. If you intended this gamejam to be about flying island scenery why didnt you it call it that - Islands in the Sky, or Floating Lands instead of Taking Flight - which to my mind does not conjure up floating anything, and is clearly about vehicles.

Yeah I kind of agree. "Taking Flight" is an action you cannot take with the kit. 😅

I'm all for them adding my vehicles to the kit by the way--fine by me 👍
