Get variable with variable modifier turns black

I am unsure if this effects anything besides the variable modifier being darker, and am unsure what causes it. I noticed how much of the variable modifier gui gets darkend depends on the value of the variable initialized. Its becomes slightly filled at 0.1 and more filled at each increment of 0.1 until it is completely filled at 1.

  Yes, some gadgets have a black bar on the face which fills up from the bottom when it's main output value is between 0 and 1. If it's below 0 it stays blank, if it's greater than 1 it stays fully black.
