Attach an object to a socket?

How to you attach an separate object to something so that it inherets its world position, but is also removable. Like a hat

  Group them together by selecting both with X and clicking the group button.
  
  Or, while holding the object with R2, scope in to the other object, then let go. This automatically makes a group with it. (This way is better for adding hats to puppet heads.)
