Can I set the rumbler to just give one short thump of feedback? I want to be able to have the player feel one heavy object fall with a single thud.

  Yes. Just power it for a short time. An easy way of doing this is to make a timeline and put it on the timeline, dragging one edge to make it not last very long.

  I haven't found this to make the rumble short enough. But maybe I can lengthen the distance between beats on the timeline so that the short space I get occupies less time....
