What's the best way to keep all paint strokes on the same plane?

I've been trying to draw some custom text and I'm having difficulty keeping all the strokes on the same z-axis. I'm having to manually move and line them up afterwards, which is proving quite tedious.

I've experimented with various guide settings but I'm not sure if one is appropriate for fixing the z-axis. I'm also painting with all other elements in the scene hidden.

  Draw a shape big enough to be your canvas. Go into paint mode, in the guide section turn on surface snap. All the strokes will be painted on the shape. Once you're done you can remove the shape.
