How do I erase paint?

I have a painted wall and I’d like to carve a door opening into it. Is there a way to erase just certain parts of a painting or stroke where I want the door?

    The wall is made of paint strokes?
    - in this case there is no way to carve. paintings can't be cut like sculpts can.
    - but, you can edit the painting (by scoping in) and move, shrink, or delete strokes with the move tool.

    Or, is the wall a sculpt and you painted it with the spraypaint tool?
    - it doesn't appear possible to move paint shapes like you can cuts, but you can paint over the area with the original color.
    - Sculpts can be cut through using the subtract mode of the sculpt tool.

    It's definitely an issue. An "eraser function" would be nice in the paint mode. Sometimes, I use strokes with the "surface function" to paint over a sculpture but if I make a wrong movement (and that happens), I have to paint everything again because it's impossible to erase just the wrong part of the painting.
