How do I simulate upstrokes or alternate picking on a guitar?

I’m looking for a more natural strumming sound for guitars. I currently use piano roll with instruments. As it stands now all I can get is a chuga chuga downstroke sound. Any tips?

  Think about what the difference in sound is. Then use that difference in sound and apply it to those notes.
  
  So for example, if you want the "upstroke" to be quieter, you could do this a number of ways:
  - Go into the piano roll and select the notes you want, then use up/down to scale them up/down in volume.
  - Use R2 while playing to lower the volume while playing the notes in performance mode.
  - Add an effect field that lowers the volume into the performance window, and play notes in that field to lower the notes on the upstroke. Or you can select the notes you want from the piano roll, go into performance mode, and move those notes around into the field.
  
  If it's not volume you're after, these kinds of techniques can help you do the same for whatever other effect you're looking for.
