Sculpture Splitting for material changing/coloring

Is there a way that I can divide up a finished sculpture(after using soft blend etc) and change the materials of the individual segments? This would be incredibly helpful for high detail builds.

  Hey,
  
  In the Tools menu in Sculpt Mode, you'll find the Cutout tool. This tool will let you take chunks of your sculpt and make them their own sculpt objects. They can then be edited separately, and will have their own material/colour properties.

  I think you can also paint different color and stuff on different parts of the same sculpt, which may be cheaper. Don't remember how to do it right now though.
