Delete photos - This is confusing
I keep getting into a situation where I cannot take a thumbnail because my local drive is full. When I go into the photo section to delete my local photos I find that most of them do not have an online counterpart. I do not understand the mechanism that makes some photos display with a world indicator and others with a local indicator. If I delete a local photo that has no online version will it remove the thumbnail from the public release? Why are some photos both world and local, some just local and some just online. I do not understand the mechanism here.

Partial answer - if you’ve used a photo for the cover pic on a creation that’s been released, and you delete that photo from your PS4, it won’t affect the creation cover page. At least, it didn’t when I tried :)
It appears to me that if you take a pic while playing a creation online, it gets automatically uploaded. Apart from that and cover pics, I don’t know. -
The ones with the world indicator have already been uploaded. If that's unlit, click it to upload. If it's lit and uploaded, click it to toggle whether it's unlisted or not.
The ones with a local indicator haven't been uploaded and are only stored locally. If that is lit, click it to delete it from local storage. If it hasn't been uplaoded, this will delete the photo permanently. -
'@Supposer That isnt the issue here. I only take photos for the thumbnail. Only time I take a photo.Full stop. That photo is taken before I release it to the public. So I am assuming the photo is uploaded at this point. Except, I have hundreds of photos that are thumbnails that are listed as local only. Not possible, because they are thumbnails of creations I have launched.There should be an online copy listed, but there isnt. If I delete the local copy Pookachoo is right, it does not affect the thumbnail of the asset, so there is an online version of this photo, it just does not appear in My photos. I could I suppose go through all my local photos and upload them before I delete them just to make sure, but I am still confused as to why some photos are online already while others are not.

Yeah, I’m looking at mine and if I delete the local save, it shows no online version. But the image does exist as the creation thumbnail, it’s juts not shown in the Customize tab.
But the picture was saved to my PS4 capture gallery and it’s still there. So deleting from your PS4 must mean your Dreams Save data specifically. The picture is still on the PS4 drive and has to be deleted from there separately, it seems -
When you set a thumbnail of a creation, it doesn't just use the original photo. It copies it into that creation as it's designated thumbnail. That's what my experience indicates.
So then when you set a photo as the thumbnail of some creation, it uploads that image completely separate to the photo listing. And the photo itself isn't uploaded, and doesn't change status in any way.
I'm unclear why some are auto-uploaded and some are not also, but it doesn't seem to be causing any problems for how I use them anyway.
