Is it actually possible to recreate the built-in puppet functionality from scratch?

Obviously not the tweak UI itself, but all of it's capabilities. I know it's early days but it would be nice to have a definitive statement if this is considered possible - i.e. using a bunch of lasers and logic for making our own procedural animation cycles, variable-tweakable knee height etc.
