Keyframes to move and rotate and object

  • CLOUD1985

It's possibly something simple to do with the way the existing keyframes have been applied to the object.

If you group the object with something, even an invisible sculpt for example, then add a rotator to the object from within the group which will rotate it.

Then keyframe the movement on your timeline but have the timeline keyframes affect the group. Then the group should move and the object should rotate within the group.

    I think this should work.

You are right by using keyframes it is recording the orientation as well as the position of the object which overrides the rotation. A mover and rotator in a timeline will however work together.

Thank you both for the answers! LadyLex: It works using a Mover in a timeline, but I wish it could work with keyframes, because it's faster to make the movement as I want. It should be possible to only record the position of an object.

Cloud1985: If I did it correct, it didn't work. Maybe you can try it by yourself, and tell me you if you get it to work?

Maybe I just need to use a mover. ?

The cause of this is because when you record the position/rotation/scale of an object, it records all three--known as a "transform." So then it restores all 3 when the keyframe activates.

Here's a tutorial showing how that stuff works: https://youtu.be/FG5YFn7npjg?t=207

To use keyframes instead of a mover, keyframe the outer group to move from one point to the other. Then use keyframes to rotate the inner sculpt within the group. When something is keyframed inside a group, it uses positions relative to wherever that group is. So if the group is moved, the keyframes setting the position and rotation of the inner sculpt will position it relative to that moved group position.

I actually have another tutorial that shows how to layer the keyframes and groups like this coming in July, but it's only available to supporters right now. If you're interested, check out patreon.com/tapgiles

TAPgiles: I tried to put the timeline on the whole group and then I scoped in and placed a rotator on the object inside the group as you explained, but it didn't work with a rotator. The object with the rotator did rotate, but the whole group didn't move at all. But it worked with a keyframe, but I can't use keyframe to rotate.
