How do I add sustain to an instrument?
I have imported the Solo Violin Sustain instrument onto a timeline. When I play it and hold down any button, the note plays, but then ends even though I am still holding the button. Is there any way to increase the sustain on a note indefinitely? I've tried all kinds of tweaks and effect fields but can't seem to get it.
Thanks in advance!

I think the granular synthesis section of the sound's tweak menu may be able to achieve this, though I haven't used it so I don't know for sure.

There are a couple of ways to do this, but it’s quite time consuming to set up.
My first suggestion would simply be to use s different instrument! Some of them are already set up to sustain just how you describe (including some of the other string sounds).
If you’re interested though (or dead set on that particular violin sound!) here’s how to set it up manually (I’m no expert so bear in mind there may be other, simpler ways of doing this!).
All of the instruments in Dreams are based on sliced up audio samples of real instruments (some with every note recorded individually, some with only a few sample slices just pitch shifted up and down).
Obsiusly it’s impossible to record a note forever, so to make a sampled instrument like these sustain you have to make a loop. You specify loop points, then you’re basically saying “when I play a note, play the beginning of the sample as usual, but loop this middle bit until I let go of the note, then play the end of the sample”.
Some of the instruments in Dreams are already set up with loop points (many of the synth sounds for example) but it’s fairly easy to add loop points to any instrument it just takes a bit of time.
Here’s what you do:
First of all go into the tweak for the instrument (L1 & square), and set “slice playback mode” to loop.
Open up the instrument itself (L1 and X) and in the top right hand of the window click on “slice mapper view”.
You’ll see every slice used (some are on the same row, because for some instruments there are multiple recordings for the same note, to add variety and make it sound more natural).
Tweak any slice (L1 & Square) and you’ll see a “loop start” and a “loop end” handle. Drag them both so they’re around a section somewhere in the middle of the slice. Click on the waveform of the slice and it should sustain as long as you hold the note down. Experiment with moving the loop points around til you’re happy with the sound.
I’m afraid you’ll have to repeat the exercise with every slice, but it only take w few minutes when you get going.
I hope that helps! -
Ah yeah, the granular synthesis definitely should be able to do this (though it’ll probably sound less natural). I’ll have a play around and see if I come up with any solutions.

Thank you guys! I’ll try these tonight.

I ran into the exact same problem with this instrument yesterday, so thanks for the answers from me too!

I applied the looping slices method and published the instrument as "Solo Violin Sustain Deluxe", in case anyone wants to try it. It's tricky to get the loop points right to avoid buzzing artifacts, so I had to delete some alternate takes that just didn't work. It's still not perfect, but it works well enough.
