How do I make something sticky?

  • Amenjo1

You could have a tag on your sticky object and a teleporter set to teleport to the tag on the object to pick up, when you want it to attach to the object turn on the teleporter, and turn off the teleporter to drop.

That’s one way to do it, there’s probably lots of other ways to do it, but that’s the simplest.

Interesting idea...! Will have a play with that. Basically I want to make it something like a mobile flying crane, so I guess I would have to limit the range that the tags 'meet' at, so you can't just switch on the magnet / crane / sticky ball or whatever, and instantly get the object on the end of your hook or whatever. I wondered if tags might be the answer to this, means everything I would have to pick up would have to be 'tagged' I guess but that's no biggie, it's only for a mini game. Cheers for the suggestion!

You could use a follower for this. Have an object follow a tag. The strength of the follower will determine how "sticky" it is. If the tag moves faster than the follower strength, the follower will let go.

Still struggling with this and I'm now pretty close. In the end I use a Force Applier to "pull" an object towards the magnet attached to my ship. I'm still tweaking the force applier to try and make it perfect, but it ALMOST works, though it doesn't clamp to the magnet, just sort of wibbles around underneath it which is better than nothing.

Now going to tweak it some more and try and get it playable. A game's no good if the core mechanic is frustrating rather than rewarding but it's getting there, very choplifter-esque! Looking forward to sharing it!

Cracked it. Force Applier was the key to it, just making it strong enough was pretty tough. Learned a couple of other useful lessons along the way.

    1) Making things like chains is fine, but they are terribly weak so if your controllable character or craft 'glitches' at all, those chains gonna break, boahhh!

    2) Wouldn't I kill for a material that either stuck or didn't stick depending on whether it was powered or not.

    3) Thrust Rescue 2 (the game that uses this) is now published so if you fancy a look, go and give it a play and see if you can beat my score!
