What do you think is the best way to create a puff of smoke painting that will linger in the air for a while and then gently fade away?
I'm thinking that maybe it's just a sig-manip with the output attached to the painting but not even sure if you can attach gadgets to paintings or not and haven't given a go yet.
Like most things though, I'm 99% sure that some of you will have ingenious ways of doing this that I haven't considered. Very curious to know different ways of achieving it.

For a slowly disappearing look you could use multiple keyframes on a timeline, and maybe set each one to enlarge the painting a bit each time while also lowering the opacity. So it would look like it's spreading out and fading away. Could also move it a bit to make it look like it's drifting.

Using keyframes is probably easiest, but if you want something that looks more like actual smoke, that kind of "billows" upwards or something, you can achieve a lot with just the painting tweak settings. It sort of requires that you paint in the right direction, and it can take a lot of trial and error to figure out what each setting does. There are lots of possibilities though (not just for smoke!), and it might be cheaper as there's no logic involved.

I'm making a guided missile. It will emit little smoke paintings out the back very quickly to create a trail, then i want the trail to gently fade away (and expand a little as ultimatriple7 suggested) after a few seconds.

You can use gadgets with anything, including tweak menu settings. So if you tweak the painting, you can plug the sig-manip into the opacity slider, something like that.
