Grid alignment change the size of the sculpture.
I noticed this for a long time but tried not to pay attention and somehow manage it. But the more often I come across it, the more it starts to look strange. And I wonder, is this really how it should work?
Perhaps this is a beginner's question that I haven't found the answer to, but still... :
When you do grid alignment, quite often the sculpture changes size, which is not always necessary and causes some inconvenience. Is there a way to avoid this?

Yes, this is by design. Imagine you have 2 cubes. One is at a funny angle and slightly larger than the other. You want the larger cube to match the angle and size of the other cube. You can use grid alignment to do that.
I can understand wanting an option for turning that off in some cases though. There are other posts requesting such features in the feedback section.
