Please help with making animations for chains and ropes. I would like my character to have a whip like attack.

I can make a chain and it stays together in play mode. However, flies apart when I try recording it in motion by dragging it.

  So if you just play time and move the chain around does it explode also? Are you using joints, or are you relying on them colliding with each other?
