How do I create a weapon trail?

I'm wondering how I'd do a weapon trail effect like what you have in most games, where a white or coloured trail follows the weapon when you swing it?

I've tried with an emitter and a particle and that doesn't seem to be no where quick enough.

  You might be able to use a painting with the physics settings (you can pin one end to an object), if you disable gravity on it and adjust the settings.

  Thanks, but I tried attach a painting but that doesn't even seem to work.

  Edit I figured it out you have to scope the painting into the actual object.
