How do I do detailed painting on scuptures?

When using the painting tool on pre-existing scuptures, the individual flexes are three dimensional, and thus seem to stick out from the the surface of the sculpture. Is there a way that the flex has a more two dimensional transfer like quality? Thanks.

  Rather than painting you might be best to use the spray can tool (2D painting) with surface snap on, you can get some really nice effects that way :)
