How do i switch between smear and blend?

Please anyone, How do you get this program to blend object rather than smearing? I don't understand?

    In sculpt mode, you can only blend when in *stamp mode* (not smear mode), then when you tweak your shape (l1+square) there will be a slider for blending.

    Someone correct me if im wrong :)
