Can you separate a single sculpt into individual pieces?

I made a sculpture using the cube/mirror/kaliedoscope tool and it produced small cubes outside of the body of the sculpt. I was hoping to apply a rotator to them so they could orbit the sculpture in varying directions. However, when I apply an effect it affects the whole sculpt instead of the cubes. Would it be similar to scoping in with groups?

  Use the sculpt mode cutout tool to chop things out into their own separate sculpts.
