I've just realised my camera is being ignored because I have a puppet in the scene for scale which is getting focus instead. I still don't see a way to change this behaviour yet though!

Never mind, figured it out - health manager hooked into a destroyer on each sculpt, then a health modifier with a zone to remove all their health :)

Following on from what Supposer said, you could make each section of the hair a group containing both a sculpt which is invisible but collidable, and a painting which is visible (but not collidable...
