Is there anyway to move a shape while sculpting back and forth in space without also moving the camera back and forth?

Remixing the basic puppet

I've finished all the sculpting tutorials so I want to make a character. Is the puppet an object or an editable sculpt? I guess I'm a bit confused on how I start modeling/remixing the puppet.
