What would happen if Dream Surfing was a standalone entity on the PS Store?

Dreams currently operates on a Trial + Unlock system where anyone with a PS4 or PS5 can download the game, but you're only allowed to play the start of Art's Dream and a curated selection of community creations until you pay for the full game. Certain events like Dreamscom have had versions created for demo players, but again, it's only a fraction of the playable event.

In my opinion this current system leaves a lot to be desired. I can understand making people pay for Mm Originals and access to DreamShaping, but I'm not sure limiting community content like that is an ideal solution. On the other hand, from what I've gathered / been told, only a very small percentage of people ever touch the creation modes in UGC games, with the vast majority of the playerbase just sticking to playing community content. So it's possible that if they did open up the entire community to demo players, most people would only play community content and never pay for the full game.

I don't really know what the correct solution is, but I'll be thankful if Dreams never goes down the free-to-play route of locking basic features behind multiple different currencies and littering the game with subscriptions and microtransactions.

I think Prestonocron suggestion is more 'make dreamsurfing free' rather than gating anything that's not already accessible to anyone who's brought Dreams. It's been suggested a few times and I still think it's good idea. Dreams has several serious structural issues at present, but one that's been an issue since the start is that far more people use the creation side of the software and much less play/view other people's work. Getting more eyes on people's works would be great! It's incredibly dispiriting to spend 200+ hours making a project and getting 20 people viewing it, and the recent severe creator bleed is showing that 'do it for yourself' isn't enough to keep creators engaged.

I really think that Sony missed a trick by not baking Dreams into the PS5. Obviously it would take big big bal*s to make that kind of decision in a company but it would have been immense. Tight integration into the dashboard. Let developers provide Dreams content accessible from the "create" button of a particular game. When a new PSN game is released developers have the option to bundle automated links to various Dreamiverse assets. So your playing Ratchet and clank, you hit create, select "Dream With Ratchet & Clank" and your taken directly into Dreams. From there it is upto the particular studio to decide what content is available. Maybe it could be a collection, character, mini game or entire level!

I mean that would have been revolutionary! A console that supports system wide developer approved fan games!

Of course this would come hand in hand with making the "play" part of Dreams free!

I know right! I was theorising before the PS5 launched, that the "create" button would do something like this! Tis a shame!

    Yes! We need more players.
The current Dreams experience for new people is very much focused on creating and learning how to control the create part of dreams. I think this probably scares off people who would rather just jump in and play games.
