I got it working, but only while standing still. When I jump and walk at the same time it vanishes.

Turns out the third option in the puppet interface is "turn to face" and plugging in right stick does exactly that. I am noob.

Try X-ray mode, you might be grabbing the sculpt that you put over the puppet instead of the puppet itself.
